The times they are a-changin’

François Charbonneau

We can only hope that things will get better, and soon. To a greater or lesser degree, we are all suffering the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. On the upside we have our everyday heroes, our angels, on the downside we are grappling with huge health and social impacts that affect us all but particularly affect the elderly, the homeless and other vulnerable members of society.

I think it’s safe to say that nothing will ever be the same again. The economy, public finances, social programs and the government itself will be reeling from the aftershocks for a long time to come. Our way of life, our work habits, our social behaviour and the very meaning of our existence will also be deeply affected.

Personally, I’ve realized how important the people in my life are to me and how much I miss my family and my circle of friends. I can’t wait to have family dinners and friendly get-togethers once physical distancing and isolation protocols are no longer in place. In my happiest of dreams I imagine a Saint Jean-Baptiste day when we will hug and kiss each other, laugh out loud and sing and dance… I can’t wait !

The presence of others, the gift of family and friends, these are the things I miss and cherish the most.
